Autumn colors in Fukuoka

Japanese changing seasons are always vibrant and unique, and one of the most anticipated is definitely autumn! With its gorgeous fall colors and gentle sunshine, it’s one of the best times to visit Japan, in my opinion. However, the city of Fukuoka doesn’t have as many famous photography spots for autumn foliage as, lets say, Kyoto city.

So, I would like to help you find the best spots in Fukuoka where you can truly enjoy the autumn leaves and beautiful scenery.

1. Hakata Old Town Area

Captured by me in 2023, November.

I recommend starting your route at the Hakata Sennen-no-Mon Gate and strolling to the attractions listed below. The Hakata Old Town area is truly worth visiting in autumn as you can enjoy not only the historical part of the city with its unique old houses and shrines but also the beautiful fall foliage. You shouldn’t miss its true gem—Tochoji Temple, with its remarkable red five-level pagoda and the giant wooden Buddha statue inside the shrine. In November, the Hakata Old Town light-up events are held. Please check my Instagram for updates on the exact dates for the 2024 fall season.

2. Kushida Shrine

While it may not have as much autumn foliage, Kushida Shrine is still a must-see temple in the city and it would be in the middle of your route towards the point 3 and 4 from below. Kushida Shrine serves as the base for one of Japan’s biggest festivals, the Yamakasa, where the platform is carried through the streets of Hakata during the summer.

3. Sumiyoshi Shrine

Is your next destination for foliage viewing as you explore the Hakata area. With its multiple red torii gates and red maples, it is a wonderful spot for those chasing fall colors. Be sure to visit the Japanese garden next to the shrine.

4. Rakusuien Japanese Garden

This compact garden is perfect to combine with a visit to Sumiyoshi Shrine. You can enjoy a cup of traditional Japanese green tea with seasonal sweets at the tea house inside the garden.

5. Ohori Park

A scenic park where you can enjoy a combination of a red maple alley, a ginkgo tree alley, take a ride in a cute swan themed boat and enter a Japanese garden with a unique fog setup that occurs every 30 minutes.

6. Maizuru Park

Located next to Ohori Park, it’s the perfect combination to visit in one day. Here, you can explore the ruins of Fukuoka Castle while enjoying beautiful maple and ginkgo trees along the castle walls, particularly on the side closer to Ohori Park.

7. Yusentei Japanese Garden

Another lovely Japanese garden, though a bit farther from the main city streets. The garden offers stunning autumn foliage and hosts light-up events during the fall season. Check their official website or my Instagram page for exact dates during the 2024 fall season.

8. Momiji Hachimangu temple

Captured by me in 2023, October

A small temple in the Nishijin area of Fukuoka City dedicated to Japanese maples (momiji). It’s a charming temple where you can find beautiful autumn colors and a piece of tranquility in the city.

9. Uminonakamichi Seaside Park

The most distantly located from the city, this park covers a vast area with seasonal blooms and vibrant foliage. It’s a highlight for nature enthusiasts and families with children. You’ll find amazing views of red kochia bushes, ginkgo tree alleys, and a variety of flowers, including the mysterious red spider lily.

10. Nokonoshima Island Park

If you’re looking for a getaway from the city with an interesting route, take a ferry to Nokonoshima Island. There, you can enjoy a stunning park with views of Fukuoka Bay, historical houses, cute cafes, and wonderful seasonal flowers and foliage.
